Trogir

The city of Trogir has 2300 years of tradition and is also known as the Little Venice of Dalmatia. The area was first settled by Greeks. The colonists came from the island of Vis. Later, Trogir represented the center of Roman province of Dalmatia. From 1420 on the city was ruled by Venetians. In the period until 1800, the town was rebuilt. The palaces, towers, and fortresses from the period remained untouched until today. The incredibly well-preserved middle ages physiognomy of the old town put Trogir on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997. The first pharmacy in Europe was opened in Trogir back in 1271. This brilliant townscape is enriched by many cultural manifestations throughout the year. The programs include concerts of classical and chamber ensembles, art exhibitions and theater plays. Most of them are held at the open auditorium. The best known is the Trogir Summer festival. The stage is part of the Kamerlengo fortress dating back in the 14th century. Another circular fortress, the fortress of St. Marko, was built as an extension of Kamerlengo in the 15th century. The relaxed social gatherings are held in the form of fishermen’s nights. These nights offer fresh grilled fish accompanied by great local wine and live music. Another must see in this “city-museum” is St. Lawrence Cathedral. Its 47 meters high tower offers a magnificent view over the old town. By all the above listed it does not surprise that the town of Trogir was one of the sceneries of the renowned TV-series Game of Thrones. In the series, Trogir represented the trading harbor of Qarth. Quarth embodies “The Greatest City That Ever Was or Will Be” for the author, George R.R. Martin.

Trogir itself is actually a tiny island between the mainland and peninsula Čiovo. The fact is hardly noticeable as the island is connected with the mainland by the stone bridge. Another bridge is then connecting Trogir with Čiovo. The Split Airport is only 3 miles away from the city of Trogir. In the area of 12 miles, there are many charter specialized marinas. Therefore, Trogir is a great starting point for nautical enthusiast.
